GILBERTS IN THE USA

It appears that a large group of the Gilbert family moved from Sussex to Illinois around 1851 (initially to New York, then to Verona, Grundy County, about 60 miles southwest of Chicago). By around 1915 the majority of the family were living in Luverne, Rock County, Minnesota, and they were farming there for two generations. Subsequently descendants lived in Hastings, Nebraska (1947), Berea, Ohio (1951), Aberdeen WA (1980) and Marshfield, Wisconsin (1981). Now they live in Eugene, Oregon. The original immigrants would seem to be as follows;

THOMAS GILBERT (b.23 Nov 1791 Heathfield, Sussex - d.8 Aug 1851 Illinois, buried Verona) = MERCY ERREY (b.17 Jul 1802 Heathfield, Sussex - d.15 Apr 1851 en route to USA, buried at sea off Newfoundland)

and their children (all born in Heathfield, Sussex);

UNSOLVED CRIMES DEPARTMENT

PLEASE HELP ME TRACE THESE PEOPLE:

-------------------------------------------------

THE CAIRO WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY

Part of the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery

My uncle David Gilbert (1888-1915) died of para-typhoid in the First World War during the unsuccessful Dardanelles campaign, and was buried in Cairo, Egypt in 1915.  His grave is in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, which is very hard to find.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission always seems to describe it as "3 miles south of the centre of the city, on the north side of Old Cairo". This is nowhere near enough detail should someone wanted to visit a grave there. In November 2004 I was in Cairo and resolved to find it. It wasn't easy. This is my advice for anyone trying to locate it.

Note that the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery is NOT the same as the Commonwealth War Cemetery on the airport road out towards Heliopolis. The Cairo War Memorial Cemetery has two sections, the main one being for over 2000 British servicemen lost in both World Wars (in the care of the War Graves Commission), and a smaller area for British civilians.

Firstly you need to get to the Mari Gergis district of Old Cairo. This is in the Coptic Christian district of the city, and gets its name from the church of Saint Mari Gergis (which I think means "Mary George").  This church is also known as "the Hanging Church" as it is built on a Roman foundation and is suspended on its four corners, so that the whole thing appears to hang in space - worth a visit in its own right !

Get a cab (you should agree the price for the job before you set off !) and head out to this district. Ask him for "MARI GERGIS" and he'll know what you mean. When you arrive in the area (which is full of cemeteries!), this is where you need the cooperation of your cab driver, although it's not totally necessary for him to speak English.  You need to be south of the "Salah Salem" road, and ask for "Shara Abu Safin". The cemetery is at No.17 Shara Abu Safin, which runs north-south, parallel with the railway.

You may be lucky and find it first time, but most likely your driver will ask someone; and most likely they won't know the answer, but don't worry - you're close. If you're lucky, he'll keep asking folk until he gets it right. If you spot an Armenian Cemetery you're getting very close, as you want the street that runs parallel to the one you're on, but behind the Armenian Cemetery. If you spot the American Cemetery, then you're getting very close indeed, as it's in the same street !  In fact it's worth getting the driver to ask for the American Cemetery as it seems to be better known than the one you want.

Keep going down the road past the American Cemetery and you should soon see the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery on the same side of the road. There are two large metal gates and you can see the cemetery through them - but they will probably be locked and you won't be able to get in. So the last piece of the jigsaw is to walk down the road to your left (if you're facing the gates) until you get to a wooden gate. Ring the bell insistently and the caretaker will eventually come to greet you. He's a really nice chap, but doesn't speak a word of English as far as I could tell.  He'll let you into the cemetery, help you find the grave you are seeking, and then give you some peace. I tipped him 20 Egyptian Pounds as I left, and he seemed happy with that.

Finally, if you do succeed in finding the place, perhaps you could collect a bit more information about its exact location and let me know.  I'll post the details on this webpage, which I hope will show up pretty well if anybody Googles the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery. Good luck !
